STEPH: Hi, Regina! It’s great to be here. I was born and raised in Manchester, NH. Believe it or not, Adam Sandler and I went to the same high school – he was two grades ahead of me. Once I graduated, I joined the Army looking for a grand adventure. I found it as an MP. I spent 7 years in Germany total and I’ve been all over Europe except for England! While in the military, I earned a B.S. in political science with a minor in sociology and graduated magna cum laude. I’ve been married since 1991. Now, I work for LAPD as a 911 Dispatcher, write in my spare time, and I love my Kindle.
How long have you been writing? What’s the most rewarding aspect of it?
STEPH: I’ve been writing since I was a kid. I remember writing Spiderman comics based on the skits from “The Electric Company,” a 1970’s children’s show. The most rewarding part of writing is getting feedback from your readers who really enjoyed the story you wrote.
You have a new release from Desert Breeze Publishing entitled “The Hungarian.” For those who haven’t read the book yet, would you tell us a little about it?
STEPH: It takes place in 1901 in England and Budapest. Count Matthias Duma harbors a dark secret, but when he meets a young British noblewoman, Katherine, he risks everything for her love. His secret? He’s a werewolf. To put it best, I think I’d say “The Hungarian” is a paranormal romance containing love scenes, intended for sophisticated for romance readers .
What was the inspiration behind your book?
STEPH: It was a prompt on one of the websites I belong to, Writing.com. The prompt was to write a story about a werewolf who falls in love.
I see it is part of a series. That’s so interesting! Could you tell us what to expect in the other books?
STEPH: Book 2 is called “The Count’s Lair” and its about Matthias’s rival, Count Anton Varga, and Katherine’s friend, pianist Amelia Andrássy. Book 3 is called “Danube in Candlelight” and is about Matthias’s daughter, Morgan, and Anton’s son, Adam.
Do you plot your stories in advance, or just start writing and see where the story goes?
STEPH: I do a rough plot or outline so I know my beginning and end. The middle is where the characters take me.
Do you belong to a writer’s group? Have you in the past? Who do you bounce your ideas off of?
STEPH: No, I don’t belong to a writer’s group. Never have. I’d love to find one though. Well, I guess I had an informal one back in 2004-2005, with my friends, Dina, Vivian, and Skin the Kat. *grin* Now, I usually bounce ideas off one of my beta readers, Kathy Kravitz.
What role does the geographical location play in your storylines?
STEPH: It helps to capture the ambience and mood of the story. I’m very, very deliberate in picking my setting and my character names.
For plot development, have your methods changed since you began writing? How?
STEPH: Not really. I have a germ of an idea. I do the initial research for accuracy and then I let it ferment a couple of days. After it starts to grow, I take pen to paper, roughly plotting, more research to flesh it out, draft character bios and then it’s time to write.
Outside of your writing life, is there something you would like to accomplish that you have yet to undertake?
STEPH: To find a racquetball partner and to finally lose the pregnancy weight I gained from Joe three years ago!
Is there someone who has been a big influence on your life? Why?
STEPH: No influences just teachers. My husband has taught me the value of family, Idgy, Alyssa, Karen, and Dina have taught me the value of true friendship, and my sons, Andrew and Joseph have taught me unconditional love.
Thank you so much for sharing with us, Stephanie. Good luck with your releases and please come back again soon!
STEPH: Thanks for having me, Regina. How are the lilacs up your way? My favorite? The purple of course! The purple lilac is the state flower of NH.
Goodie Time: I’ll be giving away two autographed postcards of the cover to two lucky posters. Also, I’ll pick one poster’s name out of the hat to receive a $6.00 to Desert Breeze! To be eligible to win, just post. I’ll pick the winners out of a hat and announce the winners on the blog no later than the next day.
